John Halder may be the hardest character I've yet played. More than Bri in "Joe Egg." More than Danforth in "Crucible." Perhaps even more than Kemp from "Vigil," although I haven't really explored the character through rehearsals yet, so who knows.

After the first read-thru, several of us actors were feeling kind of "uhhhh.... yyyeah," if you know what I mean. I personally felt that the show didn't go far enough with its interesting ideas, basically. But after 3 1/2 hours of intense character study, going over all the lines that seemed to come out of nowhere and make no sense, we too vague or too random or too whatever... my God.

It's a short play, but it's dense as hell. The responsibility to us as actors, and to myself as the omipresent lead, is to convey all these messages, said and unsaid. Add to that my director's pledge to "break my bad habits" as an actor, and we're looking at an experience that... well, it's gonna be interesting, I'll say that.

breaking bad habits is always fun. you'll start to realize that you do all these little subtle things that are intrinsic to John Hefner. then one by one you rid yourself of them. start from neutral and you'll have a great building block for a character.

will try to make it to one or both of your shows (if someone wants to haul my ass up there!)
