If you're thinking about seeing Alfie... please, please, please, if you haven't already, see the Michael Caine original. Please. Yes, Jude Law is all well and good and he's the best choice out there for the character, but this movie is the one Michael Caine's gonna be known for long after he dies... with the English. With popular American audiences, he's gonna be Austin Powers' Dad. Cynical? Perhaps. The vast majority of people I've spoken to only know him from Goldmember.
Alfie from 1966 is a brilliant movie and a brilliant play, and while critically it will not be forgotten, I don't want American audiences to think of Law's remake when they hear "Alfie." Plus, I just know they won't have the balls to do the original's ending; American audiences would never accept that, but it is nonetheless utterly devestating in a movie that is alternately charming, witty, and sleazy. Caine's so Goddamn charming that you tend for forget, or at least forgive, Alfie for being an utter bastard.
Alife is kind of like if Richard III was a 60's London swinger. Huh. Didn't even think of it that way until just now.
But yeah, for the sake of art, check out the original if you can, and that goes for any remakes in this time when original ideas are running dry (and while you're at the store, you really should check out the original Japanese Shall We Dance?)
