"Remember, remember the 5th of November..."

On the left is the cover of the original graphic novel, written by Alan Moore, the greatest comic writer alive. On the right is the promo poster for the just-announced movie, to be starring Natalie Portman (which puzzles me, because it's set in England... why didn't they go with Natalie 2.0, Kiera Knightley? Now we won't be able to tell them apart!)

Alan Moore is 2-2 when it comes to crappy film adaptations of his brilliant comics (FROM HELL and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN are both amazing comics, some of the best out there) and I still have high hopes for the WATCHMEN movie. That said, from the poster alone, and the press reports that it's going to be set in England and NOT Americanized, is very, very encouraging.

Oh, and first one to understand the significance of that tagline gets extra brownie points, since I think all of North America is going to be scratching their heads on that one.

Fuck PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. Fuck it up its stupid ass.

(Note: this is not meant to offend anyone who actually enjoyed the movie. I'm not out to get you, don't worry)

In 1935, Antonin Artaud founded the "Theatre of Cruelty." The techniques employed in Artaud's theatre included a giant screeching wheel that made deafening noise, "shredded" light, and seemingly random movements and shouting from the actors. The idea behind it was to create an experience so horrible and jarring so that it would shock the metaphorical demons out of the audience and purify them. It's an important movement, but one that, for some reason, did not last very long.

( That's kind of like what PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE was for me, except for the purifying part. )
