thehefner: (2-Face: "Go to Hell")
Slow ass day at work. I'm spending the whole day just sitting behind the counter reading comics and listening to music. Poor me.

On the CD player today: Peter Gabriel live in Washington DC, The Piano soundtrack by Michael Nyman, Central Reservation by Beth Orton, the Chess soundtrack, and currently Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. Hells yeah. Unfortunately, the player here won't play Dave's Tom Waits mixes, which pisses me off.

Man, I miss talking comics with people, but still, I wish I had more friends like Dave. People who are knowledgable and passionate about comics, but, like me, don't care for the direction of today's stories. Seriously, the shit that's been going on in Batman lately, what the fuck? Jason Todd is back and evil? Ra's al Ghul is dead and his two eeeeevil daughters are in control? The Scarecrow can now turn into a monster called the "Scarebeast" thanks to an evil villainess named, I shit you not, "Fright"?? And can I tell you how fucking sick I am of Mr. Freeze already? He's either a humorless and uncharismatic bastard or a whining sadsack: "I miss my wife." ZAP! "You're dead. I'm killing everyone. I miss my wife." ZAP!

There's this writer named Jeph Loeb. He's one of the most popular writers out there. He's also one of the shittiest comic writers I have ever read. Seriously. I don't care how popular he is, Dave can attest to this too- what the fuck is wrong with the majority of comic readers that they can't realize he's utter crap? My theory is that he always teams up with brilliant artists, which fools the readers. And for you non-comic readers, here's an idea of what I mean: Jeph Loeb wrote the scripts for the films "Commando," "Teen Wolf," and the Howie Long epic, "Firestorm." Hack writer.

Okay, that rant served no purpose, since about two people know what I'm talking about.

In other comic news, I just read a book called A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. A couple of you may know the title, because it's just been adapted as a movie directed by David "New Flesh" Cronenberg and stars Viggo "The Scourge of Capathia" Mortensen, William "I wonder if I'll be playing a dick in this one" Hurt, and Ed "I wonder if I'll be bald in this one" Harris. The book was published by the same DC offshoot that published ROAD TO PERDITION, interestingly. After seeing the trailer, I get a distinct idea of how they're changing the story to film, but it's still a neat read and if the reports are to be believed the movie of A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE should prove to be excellent.

Still, every so often, there's still stuff in comics that remind me why I love them so much. There's one single page in a recent issue of Batman that I saw today that just made my day. The story is basically 24 hours, a typical day in the life of Batman. The one page is at Arkham Asylum, 11:55 pm. Two-Face sits alone in his cell, hunched over a chess game. He checks his watch and says "Pawn to C-3." He makes the move, and through the slot in the door Batman says, "Knight to B-4."

"Mm," Two-Face says, smiling, "Hoping to put my Queen en prise?"

"You'll find out tomorrow night, Harvey," Batman says, and leaves him to plan his next move.

It's little things like that in comics that I live for. They're why I still read 'em after all this time. For all the shitty stuff and popularity that eludes me, there's still stuff like that.
