Was it too much for me to expect the name Lex Luthor to be common knowledge?

I mean, I just assume that the vast, vast, VAST majority of people I'll meet in my normal-world travels wouldn't know most things about superhero comics. Which is one of the reasons why I never talk about comics with someone who doesn't read them; I'm rather sick of the "I have no idea what you're talking about" look I get. My college roommate of two years was actually surprised to realize that I hadn't even mentioned the Green Lantern around him. At WAC, with the exception of a select handful of people like Dave and even Clancy, people couldn't tell the difference between Green Lantern and Green Hornet (why do so many people get that one confused? Green Hornet was hardly a presence even when he was a TV show, for fuck's sake!)

But when someone doesn't know who Lex Luthor is, as was the case not too very long ago, I get kind of exasperated.

Superman as transcended being a "comic book character," and so much of him has achieved iconic status. "Clark Kent" is synonymous with the face we put on for others, hiding our real selves. "Kryptonite" with our personal weakness, with that which more than anything else can bring us to our knees in an instant. "Krypton" with the home to which he can never return. "Lex Luthor" with our greatest enemy, bald or not. Superman has transcended pop storytelling and achieved what all superheroes theoretically should and do to some extent: modern mythology.

Then again, I've known people who didn't know who "John, Paul, George, and Ringo" were. Things like this inch me ever so much closer to the Dark Side of becoming the Comic Book Guy. Fat, bitter, lonely, and sarcastic. ... well, at least I'm not fat. Anymore. Yet.

Well, we've got a new Superman movie out. I am hesitant, based on some of the odder creative decisions behind it (the costume needs brighter reds and a bigger S symbol to work, it really, really does), but the one thing that absolutely, totally works for me is the casting of Kevin Spacey. And now they've released the first promo image of him as Lex.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is Lex motherfucking Luthor.

wait a sec, there's a band called "over the rhine"??? for real?

Is that surprising for a reason? Does the name have some segnifigance I am not aware of? I overheard them at Olssen's books the other day and started listening to a couple of their songs at myspace. They might be good for the soundtrack of CLOSER.

That's the name of the old german community in Cincinnati. It's been a slum for some years now. The Cincinnati race riots a few years back were there. The cops didn't try to break the riots up, just contain them to Over the Rhine so nothing "important" got destroyed.

Kinda a rare name, unless you're from Cincinnati. Then it's a very awkward conversation starter.

Interesting, because the band is actually from Cincinati. Makes sense now.

They're pretty good from the, like, three songs I've heard so far.

I have the album Ohio by the group. I like them.

Warning work-boredom fueled long-ass comment....

There are many shades of comic fandom between the fat, lonely, bitter Comic Book Guy, and the weird-job you met who didn't know who Lex Luthor is. Don't worry, we comic book geeks are everywhere that's fit to visit, console yourself with our company when you come upon the woefully ignorant.

I too am ambivalent about the new Supes movie. I wept for Christopher Reeve, but I was totally happy when they announced that they were finally going to make another movie because I LOVE Superman. Through the highs and lows of casting/directing/writing rumors (Nicholas Cage(ugggh)/Tim Burton (huh?)Kevin Smith(Yay)) I stayed hopeful that somehow it would all work for the good. I bounced around for days at the final casting of the man himself, (Go Brandon we sure do grow 'em corn-fed and cute in Des Moines). I was all kinds of happy until I saw who was playing Lois. I mean what the ish, they couldn't find a decent brunette in all Hollywood? Like Kate Bosworth has any strong celebrity pull. I finally came to blame Mr. Spacey, who probably devoloped a fixation on her in Beyond the Sea and insisted she have the part of Lois if he was going to be Lex.
So his casting as Lex is bittersweet.
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Why absolve Singer of the blame? After all, he's casting a small unknown guy who got fired off a soap opera as Superman. I agree with you on Bosworth, but I dunno, Kirsten Dunst wasn't really all that big a star when Spider-Man came out, and while she's more age appropriate she's easily the worst part of those movies (well, part 2 at least... the problems of 1 become more and more apparent with each viewing, but 2 remains nearly perfect for me).
From: [identity profile] 2sick2pray.livejournal.com
Is it so wrong that he's giving a small name actor a chance at a big break? You might want someone to take a chance on you in the same way some day.
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
You mistake me. I wasn't lambasting the decision; actually, especially where superhero movies are concerned I advocate the casting of unknowns. Rather, I was bringing it was as a possible alternate answer to the seriously questionable casting of Bosworth as Lois Lane.

And may I say that I really don't appreciate the tone of your response.
From: [identity profile] 2sick2pray.livejournal.com
My mistake...

Geez. Touchy...

What tone could you have inferred from those two sentences? I was just asking you to consider it because I interpreted you're remark incorrectly.
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
I overreacted at this and I apologize, but I think we need to talk.
From: [identity profile] 2sick2pray.livejournal.com
Ouch. Now your tone is beginning to worry me. If you're upset over something you don't want to discuss here you should email me or call or something.
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Well, I read it at a particularly bad moment today (see the latest post), but still, it's been sorta building up. I'm better now, but still, I think we should talk on IM or something lest it happen again.

He is NO Gene Hackman.

*sigh* So who has replaced Hugh Laurie?

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
What? Girl, Spacey will be BETTER. Hackman was fun, but his Luthor was easily the worst part of the otherwise flawless first Superman movie. He was campy and parodic in a movie that was moving and sincere. Luthor needs to be cold, charismatic, and calculating, not a bad guy out of the 60's Batman TV show. Spacey is *perfect*. The only Luthor who'd be better is Clancy Brown from the animated shows and Spongebob fame (he's Mr. Krabs!)

Hugh is really sad that he couldn't do the movie. Frank Langella will be playing Perry, and is arguably more appropriate for the role. But neither one is exactly the loudmouth blowhard that Perry is. 'Course, that's why they're "actors", innit?

Otherwise FLAWLESS?!?!?!?!??!!?!

*head explodes*

I have certain...objections...to that movie.

Hugh would've been genius, but I'll probably see the movie anyways.

Ok, I overreacted. But aside from the round-the-world turn-back-time thingie, it really is one of the best superhero movies ever.

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Also, you have problems with the movie but Hackman's Luthor isn't one of them??

From: [identity profile] jgurlpunkrck.livejournal.com
Ahhhh. No, I just wanted to prove that I know who Lex Luthor is.

To quote Ned Beatty: "Oh, Mr. LuTHOR."

Btw, Hugh Jackman has now replaced Colin Firth in Good. You probably know that already, but still...

OMG BUT LUCIUS MALFOY IS STILL THERE!!! *SQUEEEEEEE*

Ooh! Now THAT looks like a decent Luthor! Much more like classic Luthor efore all the hair and such. And, well, The New Adventures of Lois and Clark here a guilty pleasure of mine, that Lex always bothered me. He was so wrong for the role.

*tries to pick up jaw from floor* Kevin Spacey is going to NAIL it. I mean, he nails everything, one of the best actors EVER, but holy shit. This might actually be cool. Of course, I'm a Marvel Girl, besides Batman there isn't much in DC that I liked (ok, I read Wonder Woman for a while, and I like Harley and Catwoman)... but yeah. Marvel's where it's at for me. I'm definitely not into Superman. Tho I agree, there are just certain things that are so mainstream, anyone who doesn't get it must be living under a rock. Then again, there are still people in this country, who can afford such things as computers mind you, who still have no computer, and have never surfed the net. Not old people either, I was told of someone roughly our age who's never been on the web, nor knows how to use computers. Its kind of sad.

Spacey rocks. Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing this. Although I still say that no superhero movie has ever been as good as the comics.
