thehefner: (Thrill Me)

So my favorite genre movie site CHUD.com has been pimping James Gunn's upcoming horror film SLITHER for months now, and now the trailer's finally here. Personally, I prefer the original teaser trailer they showed at San Diego ComicCon that replaced "FOR SISSIES" with simply "PUSSIES," but alas, I knew it would have been changed.

So what's the deal with this movie? Well, here's the thing. It's by James Gunn, screenwriter of the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and the SCOOBY-DOO movies. So that's two huge marks against him right there. He also wrote the underrated THE SPECIALS. On the other hand, this movie looks like a callback to the classic "flesh horror" movies of the 80's: THE FLY, THE THING, THE BLOB, SOCIETY, VIDEODROME, etc. This genre, honestly speaking, unsettles the fuck out of me. THE THING is the scariest movie I think I've ever seen, and after five minutes of it back when I was eleven I don't think I can ever watch THE BLOB remake. Ever. This movie also stars Michael Rooker, whom most here may know as the bad guy in MALLRATS but will always be remembered for one of the horror greats, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER.

The trailer looks gooey, squirmy, deeply unsettling and rather fun, and it's been a damn long time since we've had a horror film like that. Although it kinda saddens me to say it looks a bit like a rip-off of NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, a really obscure and wonderful 80's movie about alien slugs that jump into people's mouths, lay eggs in the brains, and while the eggs incubate the hosts are turned into zombies. And so they inhabit the bodies of jocks and crash a sorority girl slumber party. And the characters have names like Raimi, Hooper, Cameron, Carpenter, etc. And B-movie great Tom Atkins (from my icon here; this was likely my only chance to explain it since no one is gonna get the reference) as a grizzled cop who says "Thrill me!" God I want the DVD of this film so bad and it's never gonna get made. I also wanna see the director's other big film, MONSTER SQUAD.

"BUT HEFFIE," many of you may be saying to yourselves, since I'm not really there, "I don't like horror movies! Assuming I haven't just glossed over this already, taking it as just another example of you ranting like flamingly geeky only-technical-non-virgin that you are, why should *I* be interested in SLITHER?" Sigh, here we go. *rolls eyes, takes a deep breath*

Nathan Fillion is in it. Yes, Mal from FIREFLY/SERENITY, as if I had to explain.

There, I said it. See y'all in line with me.

As for the other trailer:

WOODY ALLEN AND SCARLETT JOHANSSON DO "CLOSER!"

Well, ok, not really. But boy, it sure does look like it. I've heard great things about MATCH POINT, a dark drama that Woody filmed in England. The trailer makes it out to seem almost like a Fatal Attraction-type thriller near the end, which I'm guessing is misleading marketing. Regardless this film looks damn serious and dark. Not a trace of Allen nebbishness here.

I truly do hope this is a return to form for Woody. On the comedy, comedy/drama side, he's gotten a lot of shit over the years. Regardless, SLEEPER (his outright funniest ever, one of my all-time favorite comedies), WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY?, ANNIE HALL, ZELIG, LOVE AND DEATH (he made Tolstoy funny!!!), STARDUST MEMORIES, EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU, and MIGHTY APHRODITE all range from damn good to truly excellent. In my humblest of opinions, of course. I axiously await MATCH POINT to see if he can prove his critics wrong.
