$75 Porn By Alan Moore... Is It Worth It?
Aug. 30th, 2006 12:55 pmWell, I was *hoping* that my boss at the comic store in Bethesda would have an open copy of Alan Moore's LOST GIRLS, so I could read it for myself. But no, he doesn't. Which means I may have to actually buy it without having read it.
For those who don't know, LOST GIRLS is Alan Moore's epic porno featuring Dorothy from WIZARD OF OZ, Alice from ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and Wendy from PETER PAN. It re-imagines their stories as ones of sexual awakening (for example, I believe there's a scene where Peter has sex with Wendy while Michael and John suck each other off). Within these three hardcover books is apparently everything from orgies, incest, pedophilia, fisting, golden showers, you name it. Does the Tin Woodsman sport a Dirty Sanchez? Only one way to find out!
And the thing about this book? Apparently it's absolutely brilliant. Maybe one of Moore's masterpieces. We're talking about the guy who wrote WATCHMEN, V FOR VENDETTA, SWAMP THING, TOP TEN, FROM HELL, THE KILLING JOKE, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW?, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, and more. He's the greatest comic writer of all time not named Will Eisner.
It's also 75 bucks. Do I really have it in me to plunk down 75 bucks sight-unseen for three huge hardcover books of comic book erotica?
Maybe if Captain Hook and Smee do the Donkey Punch.

And yes, it sure sounds sick... and yet, this is Alan Moore, so in the context of the story, it might actually work. I'm not saying it's right, but this is Alan bloody Moore.

Would you buy an Alan Moore hardcover 3-volume complete series for that price? Hellblazer? Watchmen?
Knowing what you know now about Watchmen, would you have bought it then?
Okay, now you can add the porn factor back in. (Actually, what matters in this case is who the artist is as well.)

The neat thing about Moore is that he actually tailors his scripts to the artist he's working with, emphasizing their particular strengths for the story.
And he's been working on this with his ladyfriend over the past ten years, no less. I believe this might well be one of his most personal works.

Except for the pedo part. There's nothing that can make that palatable.
