For the first time in almost a month, our raccoon (whom I call Oy the Hamburglar)showed up on the porch to eat the cat food. We've missed him and were worried that he might have gotten run over or possibly eaten, most likely by the neighborhood fox.

Well, that latter part might be partially true, because Oy's limping around on his back leg and, more alarmingly, his entire tail is missing! Poor thing!

Kinda makes me wish I could do something. Throw a burlap sack over him and drag him to the vet? Slip my cat's leftover antibiotic medication into the cat food? Poor Oy.

a.) Glad to know I wasn't just being stupid and not realizing that there are tail-less raccoons out there.

b.) I tried thinking of how to explain it to you, and really, I think you'd best just see for yourself:

It's in the opening three minutes, but really, the entire show is my favorite on TV, so it's very much worth a watch.

my grandmother ground up penicilin and left it for the baby skunk, in the food. And it worked. So a phone call to the vet will probably tell you not to do anything, but you might either check websites, or bug them about whether or not it will hurt them. Agree with them that you shouldn't be tampering with a wild animal but then ask for a little off the record advice. Vets are vets because they don't like to see animals suffer.

Websites: also good because they are often run by people who love the animal but know the vet isn't going to tell you what to do because you shouldn't be fiddling with wild animals. My aunt learned all about her baby squirrel that way.

Marvelous, thank you very much! If nothing else, I might give that penicilin a try.

I'd find the nearesst wildlife rehabilitation center, call them ASAP, and ask what to do. I'd trap him with one of those humane traps and take him there for a check up.
