1.) It won't win, but me, I'd be pushing for American Splendor to win best adapted screenplay. Did anyone here not see this awesome, awesome little film?

2.) Again, not a fan of the movie, but goooooooo Deppy! I love Ben Kingsley, and he ruled in his movie, but Depp totally deserves this.

And finally...

3.) "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow," has been nominated for best song. I... well, I really don't have to say anything, do I? Except here's hoping for a live performance by Mitch and Mickey.

1. Yup. Loved it, and all the things they did with. But it won't win unless it falls into the documentary category. Too many films were better in other ways.

2. If I had my druthers, Lee would have gotten best actor for ROTK. Failing that, would love to see Depp win.

3. Beautiful song, and the comfort you have is every nominated song DOES get a live performance.

Btw, we've heard O'Hara sing before, as the voice of Sally Shock in The Nightmare Before Christmas. And both her and Levy were SCTV regulars. Maybe that's why I wasn't surprised.

Lee wasn't in RotK, was he? Or are you saying that you'd just like to have seen the footage?

No Oscar for Depp

I expect Bill Murray will finally get his Oscar with "Lost in Translation." Sean Penn will get some votes, although "Mystic River" got panned, while Depp will come in third.

Depp has an amazing range of roles in cinema the past few decades. I expect he will get hailed as a brilliant actor of our generation and get a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oscars. But not this year, I'm afraid.

Mystic River was panned? Uh... besides "Lost in Translation," it seemed to me to be the universally critically praised film of the year and total Oscar darling. I mean, I could totally see the Academy voting it best picture over ROTK. But I agree, I think Bill'll get the Oscar, although I will reserve judgement for it until I actally see the film.

Depp falls into the same category as the completely-snubbed BIG FISH, a strange, odd, very different performance that is wouldn't get nominated for anything. "Lost" and "Mystic River" are both safe, non-challenging Oscar choices. Case in point: "Seabiscuit" being nominated as well. Won't win, but it was nominated for the same reasons.

97% on the tomatometer, at least from the major reviewers. That doesn't necessarily mean it's good, or even that eveybody loved it. It just means they all liked it.

I didn't see it, but I'd like to.

Exact same critical rating as ROTK, if I recall correctly. I'm hoping the pressure will be on the voters enough for not giving it to the first two (and the theatrical cut of TTT totally didn't deserve/need that award anyway), in addition to the fact that ROTK was damn good anyway. As I wasn't a fan of the books before, ROTK didn't have the same kind of eye-opening beautiful revelation quality for me that Fellowship did, but it was still... well, I don't need to say it, do I? Here's hoping it gets the award.

Totally agreed on TTT. RotK had the problem of being the third movie. You'd already seen Hobbiton, and you'd already seen Gollum: the two truly novel visuals were already spent.

Like I said: you don't have to like the books, but you do have to respect them. If you haven't read enough to respect them, I'd encourage you to keep reading, or have somebody explain what it is you're looking at. If you've read enough to respect the books, give up and read something more fun. They're extraordinary achievements, but that doesn't mean you necessarily want to read them.

Nope. Once again I'm a cultural heathen.

(Had a friend who'd frequenly reply to inquiries like yours with a reply like mine, and it would bug the CRAP out of me! So now I'm replying that way to bug the crap out of YOU. Deal.)

I'm not bugged. I... well, I *like* people responding to what I have to say. I like people paying attention and... and... I'm gonna go hide now...
