So I just got the album ROGUES GALLERY, a collection of pirate songs and sea chanteys performed by Bono, Sting, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Loudon Wainwright III, Rufus Wainwright, Richard Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Joseph Arthur, Ricky Jay, Ralph Steadman, John C. Reilly, and a bunch of folk I've never heard of.

The reviews for this album have been mixed, a lot of people decrying the "in-authenticity" of the songs, or the songs being really hit or miss and way too eclectic. Some people negatively described some songs as sounding off-key, uneven, drunken, even spoken rather than sung. Yes, people, that is because you're listening to NICK CAVE AND LOU FUCKING REED. Fools.

No, not every song works. But every song is interesting, every song is bold and different, and that's what's most important. Because the good ones here are... really, really good. My favorites include John C. Reilly's (surprisingly, and yet not so surprisingly), Loudon Wainwright's ("Turkish Revelry" is beautiful, while "Good Ship Venus"* is one of the dirtiest songs I've ever heard), Brian Ferry's "The Cruel Ship's Captain" (sounds like a nautical version of Harry Chapin's "Taxi") and Bono's (the sole reason most people would have to pick this album up).

Now I really, really, really wanna produce a version of Eugene O'Neill's ANNA CHRISTIE, just to play this entire album throughout the production. It's a hell of a show anyway, and one of the few O'Neill plays the Rudes could actually do (it's under three hours).

I have a confession
When reading previous posts of yours, I had noticed the mention of the band "Oingo Boingo". Now in my limited musical knowledge, I honestly thought they were a made up band or indeed a local college band.
A couple of weeks ago my curiousity got the better of me and I went to their WIKIPEDIA entry.
Seeing Danny Elfmans name made me then check out Play.com and I saw their greatest hits for £4 and change including postage from the States to my home here in the greatest country in the world...for scotsmen!!
As the Dollar is almost 2 to the Pound, you can see why I then purchased said greatest hits cd. I got it last Friday and had a listen.....Its not bad..not brilliant but very listenable. Favourite Track...Dead Mans Party.
So why am I telling you this? Well I just wanted you to know that throught the wonders of the interweb you have influenced a scotsman to buy a cd of a band that he was not sure about.
You should probably get a badge or something!!

Oh really?? Well, I'm not all that surprised, as most folks have no idea what an "Oingo Boingo" is, but they were very popular with geeks in the 80's. They never had much more than a strong cult following and a couple hits.

Give it a few repeat listens... they really have a way of growing on you. If you don't already have them, look for "No One Lives Forever," "Not My Slave," "Insanity," "Gratitude," and "Little Girls." Also, you can find several videos on youtube.

Buuuuut that's assuming you can burn CDs yourself. If you need a disc... well, it'll be tricky, since I'm having issues uploading it onto itunes, which is where I do my burning, but I suppose I could just do it the old-fashioned way...
