Apr. 26th, 2007 01:09 amJohn McCain was on THE DAILY SHOW last night, which makes it his, what, twenty-seventh appearance? There's a reason he's a regular: Jon Stewart clearly hugely respects the man, and McCain's always been able to keep a cool head and wit with Stewart. But last night was a bit tough to watch at moments, mainly because every time McCain went to answer one of Stewart's questions, Jon jumped right on him, interrupting McCain with a rant (usually in the form of another question), which would cause the DAILY SHOW audience to burst out in applause. This cycle was repeated throughout the ten-or-so minute interview.
I mean, I know they have to cram a lot in ten minutes, so I understand that to an extent. Honestly, I do wish I could see a half-hour or hour of Stewart and McCain actually having a discussion. Every point that Stewart brought up was a good one, but fuck it all, I wanted to hear McCain actually respond, not Stewart just preach while his audience whoops it up. Hopefully this won't be McCain's last appearance, for it'd be a rather frustrating note on which to end their relationship. I love Jon Stewart; the man's one of the few reasons I have to watch TV regularly. But last night was rather disappointing.
But tonight had Aasif Mandvi, who's proving to be one of the sharpest correspondents the Daily Show has ever had. Not to mention THE GIANT HEAD OF ROBERT LOGGIA.* So it's all good.
*Sadly minus his beloved jet-pack.

Me, I think the two shows compliment each other beautifully. They're like Corona and tequila! Stella Artois and Jack Daniels! Lowenbrau and skittles!

Date: 2007-04-26 04:08 pm (UTC)I haven't been a fan of Stewart since some time after the 2004 elections--right around the time that he decided that mugging and funny voices were actually funny. I know that by the summer of 2005 I had only been watching it in the hopes of seeing Our Stephen pop up. Once the Report started, I dropped Stewart and haven't regretted it since.
I think part of it is Stewart's constant slagging off on his audience, calling them unemployed stoners and whatnot. If he wants to be self-deprecating, fine, but leave me out of it. I'll gladly redirect my affection to Stephen, who calls me a hero and wants to impregnate me (for money).

Date: 2007-04-26 04:29 pm (UTC)Maybe I'm just so disillusioned and jaded with politics (wow, I sound like a Hot Topic kids... ugh, maybe that's the wake-up call I need), that copping to bullshit seems refreshing amid the typical D.C. game. And he tried not pandering. It's why his ass didn't get elected. Or so I understand. This is why I keep my big trap shut where politics are concerned most times. Can we go back to complaining about DC Comics now? Please? A land where everyone gets along?
Aye, I've known a few people who are more than a bit frustrated with Stewart resorting to Bush impressions than actually making an insightful or witty joke.

(Yes, your money!) Well, I can't argue with that logic. ;)

Date: 2007-04-26 04:51 pm (UTC)Also, I believe you misunderstand how McCain got beaten: it was not necessarily because he was a straight talker, but because (surprise!) the Bushies played dirty.
(Seriously, Amazons kill children now? Isn't one of their patrons the protector of children?)

Date: 2007-04-26 04:56 pm (UTC)As for the Amazons, I... I just don't fucking know. Look, between this and SILENT WAR (I really don't have any investment in the Inhumans, but when a comic company has to arbitrarily screw with a happy couple, and by having her go seek solance in the dude who all but raped her... oy), it has not been a banner week for "Fictional culture goes to attack the comic book U.S." stories.
