Brutal.
WHEN THE WIND BLOWS, based on the book by Raymond Briggs (famous for the children's picture book THE SNOWMAN), with music by Roger Waters and theme by David Bowie.
Watch the whole thing, if you have the time. Eight parts in all, plus a split sixth part.
Supposedly, it'd a good compliment to GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, which I haven't seen, but plan at watch soon. If only to watch with my brother, who claims to be unable to care about animation unless it's used for humor and/or social commentary. Even if GRAVE is probably comment-arily enough to suit his tastes, I'm hoping it will ease him into the other realms of possibility of which animation is capable.
He caught me watching FULL METAL ALCHEMIST (one of the few anime series I desperately, completely love and admire... if only more live action were as rich as that series) for a few seconds and turned away in eye-rolling disgust and mockery.

Um, how about I just take your word that it's a work of genius, and leave it at that?

When I read it I was early teens (I think) and it really affected me. The last page especially is frightening and sad at the same time.
I havent actually seen the animation, I suppose the book holds such a weird place in my childhood that I am not sure if I would want to relive it!
Strangely I mean that in a good way.

But I know what you mean. You're more on the nose than you think; I'm going to do a follow-up post on this one sometime.
