thehefner: (I'm a pirate! YARR!)

So why did no one tell me of the existence of Piratz Tavern, the pirate-themed bar and restaurant in Silver Spring? Is it possible that my piratical-obsessed friends in the Rudes somehow missed this, or am I just so out of the loop that I'm the last person to find out? If it's the latter, then truly shall I know I have drifted from you guys.

([livejournal.com profile] disc_sophist, what else have you been keeping from me?!)

I went there yesterday to kill an hour before going to see GOJIRA (GODZILLA) at the AFI, a theater I absolutely must frequent more frequently. When I decided that it might be fun to try the grog, the bustier-clad waitress asked, "rail or top shelf?" Not knowing what exactly was in grog at the time, I nonetheless instantly asked for top shelf. The day I start drinking crap just to get drunk is the day we should all start worrying.

Then she asked, "Glass or mug?" Well, I had a couple hours to sober up, so I said, "mug." So out she returned with big ol' man's-mug of grog. For those who don't know, this particular grog was comprised of three kinds of rum (Tortuga, Bacardi, and some other notable name brand), triple sec, and a strange new substance called falernum, which also contains rum, ginger beer (they make alcoholic ginger beer?), and cloves. I think the cloves were they only nonalcoholic part of the entire mug.

So. Yeah. Kinda wasn't expecting that. Ha. Ha.

I still wasn't sober when I get out of GOJIRA, so I decided to make a double-feature of it and see the AFI's new print of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, which is even funnier when coming down from a mug of rum in a theater-full of aging geeks.

A good evening all in all, even though I still don't have all the feeling back in my lips. Next time, I'm definitely not going to Piratz Tavern alone. Also, I may sometime go dressed as Corsair, the space pirate from X-Men. Perhaps for my birthday party.

Ha! Well, if you ever go get the free time so we can finally hang, mayhaps we should make an evening of it. Just as long as you're driving, so I can have that grog again. Mmm. Wonder if they make it to go? hehehe, I could get a grog sippy cup!

That is admittedly job A, which I'm usually at in the morning, but it's still a cool night spot. But definately. I've probably told you that I'm the single worst drinker ever - last time I went out salsa dancing with some friends after eating an entire California Pizza Kitchen pizza (so, at least I was drinking on a full stomach) I had two gin & tonics (important lesson in Abbabwe: it is funny when men buy you drinks. it is funnier when they are all older and shorter than your 5'3.) and, when my friends decided it was time to go, they discovered on the sidewalk outside that standing upright and speaking clearly were no longer among my capabilities.

So yes. Frequent designated driver am I. :p

By the way, I wish I had your number, because I am in desperate need of good company for movie and dinner. AFI is showing RUSHMORE and JUNO tonight. Mom doesn't want to go, but she's taking grumbling pity on me, and we're just gonna see JUNO. Also, grog will hopefully be involved. But yeah, wish I had your number. Another time, then!

yeah, don't drive away from there.

Also, the cheese plate is extremely satisfying if you accidentally have a granny smith aple tucked away in your pocket. Possibly less saitisfying if not.

It's around the corner from my work, so give a call next time you go.

I like the idea of the place, have been and for just a drink, it's okay... but to dine the food is meh for the price and I'm not even that much of a foodie. Maybe it was a quiet Friday, but except for the pirate singing clan of 15 in the back patio that night, it looked pretty dead. The stone-cooked steaks are decent tho and must admit I had fun.

Still, VERY cool someone tried to put up a joint like that.

GOJIRAAAAAAA!

I haven't had enough food to judge yet, but the grog alone was mighty tasty (though obviously not cheap; the mug was thirteen bucks).

I appreciate that the place seems to have a sorta dive-bar quality to it, as I was expecting sort of a Medieval Times or Rainforest Cafe type dealie.

Please note the following things:

A: We live within walking distance of Piratz

B: That is where Dave's birthday party is being held

C: We are game for drinking there most nights, other than Fridays

I'd totally go there.

What are the prices like?

A bit pricier than the usual Hops fare, like around 9-10 bucks for dinner dishes. It's not like going to Marrakesh in DC, but it's not like Bennigans either.

I've yet to tell, honestly. I only went there once, and on a full stomach. The only things I ordered were a cup of corn soup in coconut milk (nice, nothing brilliant, but nice) and a fucking MUG OF GROG, which I really rather liked. I'd hoped to go with Mom a couple nights ago for more grog and to actually try the food, but it was closed.

So we went to Austin Grill instead, and I finally had a Margareta. I got it from the Top Shelf selections, the most expensive of the expensive, the "Presidente." Instead of triple sec, it had cointreau, and the tequila was a premium añejo.

Sweet merciful Grodd, Danny... it was fucking amazing. I'm seriously dying to have another one. Well worth the twelve bucks. Now I'm afraid to drink a lesser Margareta.

Hehe.. We can go and do the margarita adventure whenever. They can vary drastically, not just in quality but in flavor.

Maybe we can do Don Pablos for them sometime.

The "Presidente" used Tesoro Añejo, with Cointreau and fresh lime juice. That's my one of choice for right now and goddamn it I want another one BAD. I may splurge fifty bucks and get a bottle sometime.

(Also, I'm currently drooling over Grand Patron, which costs $500 a bottle. God I so desperately desire a snifter of that. C'mon, Misty's wedding, have a rich bastard open bar...!)

If we do have a margarita adventure anywhere else, it'd have to be someplace where we can chill for at least a couple hours, because I'm guessing I'd have to drive. Honestly, I'm much rather not drive at all. This is the main issue generally anyway.

We can try to find ways around this driving thing.

As for the rest.. dude, I can't afford top shelf. I have to live with rail.

Hopefully so. If I get the good stuff, hopefully I can master making fresh margaritas at home.

I know, dude. I know. You may sip from mine. Ew, Danny germs!

By the way, I'm dorkily kinda proud of my dork self for this:
