Oh... migawd.

Jimmy Kimmel's rebuttal to Sarah Silverman's "Matt Damon" video:

It's not as catchy, so Sarah still wins that side of things. Lord knows, I still find myself singing it, particularly the hip-hop portion ("Knock-NAAAAACK!" "WHO'S DAT KNOCKIN' AT MAH DOOR?!"), but I think we ca successfully declare that Kimmel drank Silverman's milkshake.

After all my concern, that actually was a relatively painless Academy Awards.

Glen and Marketa winning was definitely the high moment, almost crushed when the orchestra unintentionally played them off before Marketa managed to say anything... but then Jon Stewart returned to bring her back out! Classy move!

I only watched the show halfway through, and I kinda regretted not starting from the top, just because Stewart was entertaining and no-bullshit throughout.

Do I think THERE WILL BE BLOOD deserves the Oscar more than NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN? I honestly do. But NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is fucking brilliant anyway, so hell, I'm fucking happy.

Besides, I like to look at it this way: the Coens have been making excellent films for years now, while PTA made PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, which I still hate so very, very deeply. But after THERE WILL BE BLOOD, he's shown that he truly is a genius talent, hopefully with his best work ahead of him.

And while I was dreading Diablo Cody's inevitable Best Screenplay win, once it actually happened... aww, man, I couldn't hate her. I still hate large chunks of her movie, but seeing her there, how overwhelmed she was, and her speech... well, I just couldn't bring myself to beskittle her biddle-diddle. I have no idea what I just said there, but I'm sure it'll make sense to her.

Note to self: always watch the Oscars with [livejournal.com profile] fishymcb and [livejournal.com profile] marred82. When DDL won best actor, Kevin (who hasn't even seen TWBB yet) declared: "I DRINK IT UP, CLOONEY!!!"

Best portions of CHUD.com's running Oscar commentary:

7:39pm - Harrison Ford doesn't look a day over infinity.

7:47pm - I wonder how much Barbara's face would crumple from even a punch at half strength from Roddy Piper.

8:09pm - Miley Cyrus is a presenter. Clint Howard is not. Fuck Buddha in Allah's ass.

8:19pm - It's good that Tilda Swinton decided to get sexy for the Oscars by looking like the freeze dried version of Carrot Top.

9:44pm - "The always fantastic Jessica Alba"? What built this madness?

9:53pm - Miley Cyrus is alive. Fuck being at the Oscars. Why does she take air that belongs to the sparrows and rhinos?

As for the deaths, I understand Roy Schedier being too late to qualify so he'll be there next year... but where was Brad Renfro?

All in all, not a bad night. But thankfully I had friends and whiskey to make it all go down better.

Oh, CHUD. Because god forbid a woman show up at the Oscars NOT bursting with Botox, wearing virtually no makeup, and with her hair not styled into a stiff pompadour. I love Tilda precisely because she doesn't look plasticene. She's gorgeous and real looking.

I thought of you when DDL won last night!

Edit: "I drink it up, Clooney"? Significance?

I know, I actually find Tilda attractive, but many people give me weird looks when I say that. But CHUD.com appeals to the misanthropic geek side of me, what can I say? And honestly, I wouldn't say she looks "real" either. She's only "real" in the sense that she's not "Hollywood standard of beauty," but I don't personally know any women who look like an alien.

As for the significance, have you seen THERE WILL BE BLOOD yet?

She looks like an alien? Honey, she looks English.

Also, the above video? "Dedicated to the Memory of Norman Mailer." BAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA. Priceless!

No. I am seeing TWBB this Wednesday night at our local funky NOT corporate owned theater, where they still make popcorn themselves and where the staff comes in to announce each film and to tell people to turn off their cell phones or face death by firing squad.

... so tempted to respond with "Eeeeeexactly!"

That really was the kicker, wasn't it?

Ah, a wise choice! I'm a firm supporter of funky local awesome movie theaters. Hopefully the film won't have been overhyped like insanely for you by this point.

As for the video, not yet, but I will.

As for the stills, I can't! For some reason, they're not showing up!

I blame Firefox. For some reason, certain images don't load!

Try Opera. I've had the same problem with Firefox. Oh, what usually works? Is just to uninstall and then reinstall Firefox. With a high speed connection, that whole process takes all of three minutes.

On star power alone, I have to say Kimmel rebuttal comes pretty close. Josh Groban singing about fucking Ben Affleck is pretty damn funny.

The Once win was definitely the highlight of last night. But I was bummed to miss out on a new Michael Moore rave out or a Juno upset.

The Groban really did seal it. Something about his voice getting bleeped out repeatedly is just delightful.

I'll see your Punch Drunk Love and raise you The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty (although I liked that one, kinda)...

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Trust me, I'm with you there (on IC, which I disliked; I haven't seen LADYKILLERS, but I've heard plenty), but they've also done BLOOD SIMPLE, MILLER'S CROSSING, BARTON FINK, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY (maybe not as good as I remember?), RAISING ARIZONA, and FARGO.

PTA has MAGNOLIA (which I recall being all right) and BOOGIE NIGHTS (which I liked).

So the sheer quality output is in the Coens' favor. Like I say, PTA has many years ahead of him to catch up, and hopefully he will.

From: [identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com
MAGNOLIA: where PTA coaxed a MAGNIFICIENT performance out of Tom Cruise, of all people. "TAME THE PUSSY!" Good lord, he was incredible in that film!

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
I need to see it again.

A good director can get a solid performance out of Cruise, every now and again. I really dug COLLATERAL, but that's because Michael is the Mann.

Date: 2008-02-25 05:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com
I see what you did thar!

Agreed about Collateral. We've had the Adoration of Michael Man talk. Totally. :-) And again, one of the most singularly badass things I've ever seen in a film was Tom Cruise's chillingly effective and realistic execution of people in the nightclub towards the end.

Actually, I like Hudsucker more now than I did the first time I saw it- it's replaced Miller's Crossing as my #2 fave Coen. Don't forget Lebowski, either!

I'm pretty happy about the Coens FINALLY getting the Oscar love. I was just kinda reacting to the slam on Punch Drunk Love, which I thought was pretty good.

I'm still a BLOOD SIMPLE man. I think it's a perfect film, especially with the shorter director's cut. One of my all-time favorites, and NO COUNTRY felt like a sister film to it, which helped.

Ah, LEBOWSKI! I actually haven't seen that since it came out in theaters. Back when I was a teenager. I liked it, but I'll be interested to see if it holds up, or if it's been crushed by its own cult.

I am going to give PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE a second shot because of its many intelligent fans, but oh dear lord, rarely have I hated such a film with such pure burning fury in my life.

Lebowski has, in my opinion, been ruined somewhat by it's terrifying, suffocating film-student fans, who if you know them in real life will quote from it over and over until your ears bleed. Even the funniest lines can be ruined by repetition, and this movie is no exception.

I'm a fan of Millers Crossing, myself. I like film noir, and the father-son relationship between Byrne and Finney is magnificent.

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Exactly as I fear. It easily lends itself to browncoating, sadly. But I'll totally see it again. Furthermore, I totally need to rewatch MILLER'S CROSSING, which I haven't seen in six years. It's a favorite of several people I know as well, and I can add you to that list.

Have you seen BLOOD SIMPLE?

Date: 2008-02-25 07:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nymphgalatea.livejournal.com
I've seen all the Coen brothers movies, but, weirdly, Blood Simple was both my first Coen film and my fifth.

I watched it on an appallingly badly pirated VHS tape back in about 1990. My mother came downstairs one morning to find the six-year-old me sitting with my nose squashed to the TV, utterly enthralled, watching the live-burial scene. She stopped the tape, and I didn't get to see the ending until I was about fifteen and had watched the "safer" Coen movies like Raising Arizona and Hudsucker (both of which I have a terrible soft spot for).

I do like Blood Simple, yes. The final exchange between McDormand and the detective is absolutely masterful. It's incredible to think that was their first movie.

Date: 2008-02-25 07:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Oh good! It's one of their lesser-seen films, and thus it's one of those personal cult films I try to spread around, like RAVENOUS and THE NINTH CONFIGURATION.

So you saw the director's cut? The one that's actually shorter than the original?

Yeah, that final exchange (followed by "The Same Old Song") just sealed its awesomeness. :)

Date: 2008-02-25 08:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nymphgalatea.livejournal.com
I...think I've seen the original cut? Damn, it's really time I got the film on DVD.

I do love these terrifying end moments of Coen Brothers films. John Goodman charging down a burning hotel corridor bellowing "I'll show you the eyes of the mind!" scared the living crap out of me when I first saw Barton Fink.

Date: 2008-02-25 08:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
The director's cut is so Coen-y. It even has a introduction by a fake video remastering company president explaining the new cut. Very much worth the checking out, if you get the chance! :)

Ah, yes! I think my reaction to John Goodman there was much like my reaction to Daniel at the end of THERE WILL BE BLOOD: namely, to giggle and squee in awesome terror.

From: [identity profile] kosher-jenny.livejournal.com
So, Lebowski has become the new Monty Python and the Holy Grail? That saddens me. >:

I have to get caught up on my Coen-watching. I still need to see a lot more of their films. To the Netflix queue!

Date: 2008-02-25 10:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Oh, you should totally catch up! What an experience you have ahead of you. Some are better than others, obviously, but man, I think they're all worth checking out. Well, except maybe THE LADYKILLERS, we'll see about that.

Man, do I love me some BLOOD SIMPLE.

Also, they were involved in the making of EVIL DEAD. So, I could consider than an honorary Coen Brothers film!

I really wanted to like Intolerable Cruelty, but the fact that Zeta-Jones and Clooney had absolutely zero chemistry put me off in the end.

Apparently the death-montage only includes members of the Academy. Getting an oscar nomination automatically makes you a member, which is why Ledger was in there, but not Renfro.

Er, tell a lie, turns out that he really was cut for time-related reasons.

...I like my version better.
