thehefner: (The Hefner Monologues Sign)

It's becoming increasingly apparent that I need to get THE HEFNER MONOLOGUES back down to 60 minutes.

At least for Fringe Festivals. Apparently the vast majority of shows here at 60 minutes long, so anything longer feels long by comparison. Down the line, when I'm better established and am headlining a show, I can do the full 90-minute version. But for now, it looks more and more like I gotta get back to 60.

The thing other solo artists have said (in general, not about my show in particular) were variations along the lines of KILL YOUR BABY. Alternately, they say if you cut the legs off your baby, you still have a baby. Just with no legs. Problem is, I'm so close to the show that I have a hard time telling if I'm cutting off a limb, an eye, or the heart. If that makes any sense.

I did it before, originally. But the show's been edited and reshaped and improved a lot since then, and it looks like the "Day in Traffic Court" story is gone completely. Unless it's more essential to the story than one of the other parts.

This shit ain't easy. But it looks like it's gonna have to get done. What can stay, what can go, what needs to be honed and what is the real heart that need to be the focus? Hrm.

Well, I'm already signed up for 90 minutes at Boulder Fringe, and unless they let me relist my show at 60, that will be that. For better or worse.

this is the problem i have with papers.

i suggest getting as mechanical as possible. something i'm very bad at.

an outline. a limit on how much to flesh each part out. recognizing what parts are core (vita organs, bones, muscles), and what parts are appendix and tonsils.

if you start with the framework rather than the exquisite details, it's much easier to shape and cut.

not a fun task. don't envy you. then again, i'm already there. at least yours is art, and it's your own. good luck.
