Does anyone by chance have a straw skimmer hat (AKA a boater hat) that I could borrow, or know where I can get one of decent quality for a reasonable price (without going online, for I'd need it Friday)?

For that matter, what are those knobbily canes that folks (vaudevillian-types, I think) would use to accompany skimmer hats? Y'know, when they'd go out on a merry jaunt around 1910 or whenever?

Finally, does anyone know where I can procure men's sock garters? I tried calling Syms, but that went nowhere, and an older gentlemen at Macy's said he hadn't seen those in years.

Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.

Not a clue, but if you know where I could get a cheap green wig in the area I'd google my ass off for your items. And/or ask Housemate 1, who has done work in theater stuff in the area.

Cheap? Dunno how to help there. The best costume place in the city that I know of is Backstage, which is where I always go for dressin' up fun.

Now, I *have* a green wig, but if you're thinking about using it Friday, that might go either way. See, the colors are awesome, but it's a little unruly. I'm gonna try to experiment with comb-in hair color, see how that works. If not, I may opt for the wig, but again, the damn thing is really unruly.

Yeah, the thing is, in all likelihood I'd never use it again so I don't wanna spend too much. I'll look/ask around. For your stuff, too, although no promises.

If you're thinking about using it just Friday evening (and if you're going to the Uptown 7:05 show), I might just be able to trade it off with you. Assuming I'm not using it myself. We'll see.

I'm going to that show, yes. With Carlen and a bunch of other people. Hopefully I shall see you there?

Also we need to figure out Wednesday at some point, if you're still game.

You shall indeed! But be warned, Bloo and I will likely be separate, huddled to our own corner. This is an oddly personal thing for us, you understand. She wouldn't be flying in just for the day if it weren't. Just so you know! :)

Wednesday early afternoon is best. 2ish? There's a show I wanna see at 8:00, but I'm gonna want to get there a couple hours early to try and get tickets. Orrrrrrr, I suppose, I could just go and get them online. Hm. Yes, that would be the better plan, wouldn't it?

[amused] I kinda figured, but now am Officially Warned.

And yeah, works for me. The 'rents house is like ten/fifteen minutes away from there anyway.

2ish works for you? Awesome! Same place as last time, aye? I'll be able to park on the street and everything without fear of reprisal from DC cops targeting my invading Maryland tags?

The show I'm planning on seeing isn't in Adams' Morgan though, if that's what you mean. It'll be at Woolly Mammoth, a few blocks down from Chinatown. You could come with, if you'd like!

Yeah, 2ish. Same place as last time. And while during the day there is sometimes a cop issue, you can just park at the top of our driveway, so no problem anyway.

I'll have to check my schedule, but that sounds cool.

I'll ask around and let you know by wednesday.

Sweet! I'd need 'em by Thursday evening. I can live without any of the above items, but it'd be super-nice to have 'em.

I should have qualified that with "No guarantees." But I'll see what I can do.

But of course. No worries if nothing comes up! :)

I've a relatively large hat size... except the straw boater I have is actually an antique, so not that one...

We'll dig out the plastic one (it'll fit), and I have a black cane you can use (same one [livejournal.com profile] cavenessity used for her Victoriana shoot with Roy, unless you wanna use the pimp stick)... we don't have a vaude-villian bamboo cane... and your best bet for sock garters in a hurry is to, uh... they're these elastic things that you use to cinch the back of a sun dress... or you can borrow my white costume spats.

Say one way or the other and I can load them into my car, and if you can show up to rehearsal (St. Andrew's Church) tomorrow around 9:30-10 you can borrow them.

How does the plastic one look? I dunno, if I can get one at all, I'd really like a real straw one, or one that at least looks authentic. Actually, hm, considering I may have comb-in green hair color that may rub off, perhaps actually buying one would be a better plan. I have a wig, but... yeah, we'll see.

I have costume spats, that part's good. Hrm, hopefully Men's Warehouse could hook me up with garters. The toupee'd Ron Silver wannabe on TV guaranteed that I was gonna like the way I look, so he'd better live up to his promise.

The cane, however... that could well come in handy. Where is St. Andrew's Church? I'm heading over to Chenoa's folks' house sometime tomorrow evening, if you're familiar with that area.

('tis Sean, too lazy to log her out...)

And the plastic boater doesn't suck, I'll have it with me anyway.

I have two boater hats, but they are womens and will therefore probably be too small for your head.
But you're welcome to try them.

From: [identity profile] thehefner.livejournal.com
Yeah, I... I have kind of a huge noggin. Unless they're size Large, it just ain't happenin'.

Using [livejournal.com profile] scarydavedc's head as a guide, they will most likely not fit you. Sorry. :(

Mens sock garters can likely be found at some of the upscale stores in Georgetown. You'll pay out the nose, though.

You could try Oh Susanna in Fells Point. They're right on the corner of Broadway and Fleet. They have a ton of vintage clothing from the first half of the 20th century. A friend of mine had a 1940's theme party a year ago and nearly everyone bought their outfits from Oh Susanna. It's pretty inexpensive and all the clothes are in good shape. I'm not sure if they have exactly what you need, but you could always call them and find out. The number is (410) 327-6620.

Hm! I've been trying to call them, but no one has picked up so far. I'm gonna keep trying, because really, that sounds like an awesome store for a number of things I'm looking for. Thankya!

sorry, a bit busy to read all comments...but if they didn't produce anything, I have a white cane and a boater (slightly damaged but not noticeably) if you can get to baltimore or silver spring in the next 2 days.

Oooh, what size boater? I have a largeish head, will it fit? I can much more readily so Silver Spring that Baltimore. :)

can you put ladies elastic garters with the dress tie-back clip things in some unholy sock-garter combination? I can't say if it would look good or not, since lady garters tend to be frilly.

hrm... perhaps you can just sew a cuff of elastic and add the clip thingies to it?
