By the way, I meant to write about this weeks ago, but if you have a chance to see this movie...

... by all means, do it.

This is one of those magical films where people can and will have vastly different interpretations, and they'll be every bit as legitimate. Like ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, this is a film that is perfectly suited to both sentimental romantics and caustic bitter cynics, depending on how you read it. It also may well be one of the best vampire movies ever made, and this is coming from someone who hates vampires.

I want to break into movie theaters and replace every single reel of TWILIGHT with LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. This film deserves that attention, and thankfully (yet somehow also unfortunately), it's poised to explode in a "this year's PAN'S LABYRINTH" kind of way, and needs to be seen before the wave of overhype hits. Not to mention before the pointless and inevitably wrong-headed remake by the fucking CLOVERFIELD guy comes out.

Speaking of pointless and inevitably wrong-headed remakes, we're getting remakes of two absolutely fantastic Korean films. Bad enough they're redoing THE HOST, which shows the CLOVERFIELD folks how one really does a modern love letter to Godzilla films with a wonderful dash of socio-political satire (so that even my stepfather Gordon loved it!), but we're also getting a remake of OLDBOY.

Yes, an American OLDBOY. To be released as a July 4th blockbuster. Written by the I AM LEGEND screenwriters. Directed by Spielberg. Starring Will Smith.

Someone locks me in a room for fifteen years with no explanation, just to spare me from this atrocity.

I still have yet to see Oldboy. It may be on my netflix list.

I think I had the same response to it that you had to Ratatouille when you said you knew it would be genius, what was the point in watching it. Yeah I know it doesn't make sense.

It's strange how the Pixar movies (though I haven't seen Cars) are all brilliantly animated, funny, and heartwarming, and it's pretty much predictable that they're all like that, which seems annoying, even though they are still great movies. It's like I'm waiting for Pixar's Southland Tales, even though I don't want that.

Heh, oddly enough, I did the same thing with OLDBOY too until my brother insisted I watch it. It doesn't make sense, but I understand it, and I'm glad you do too! Now let's actually go see those movies!

I do need to see The Host and Oldboy. Is Oldboy as squeamish inducing as it sounds?

It's definitely got its moments. Not in an ICHI THE KILLER way, but... yeah, definitely moments.

The Oldboy thing made my face hurt from cringing too hard too fast. Good lord, I am Legend was neat but it wasn't -that- good, I mean come on Omega Man was more interesting to watch for the most part! *sigh*

Have you ever read the original book by Richard Matheson? If not, I beg you to do so. It's short and it's one of my all-time favorites. I still haven't been able to bring myself to see the film. I'd much rather watch the first (and most faithful) adaptation, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, with Vincent Price.

I have not, but I will try to.

My first thought about the Wiki Smith version of OLDBOY is that the corridor fight scene will now include

- Body Popping
- Will Wiki Smith having a music video moment (or moments) in the fight with Jazzy Jeff as a sort of tag team assistant
-the fight will end with Wiki Smith shouting "Now thats what I'm Talking about" as he seems contractually obliged to do in EVERY FILM HE IS IN

I am not a fan of Will Smith but even if I was, I doubt I would have cast him in this.

Oh god, the visual fills me with giddy horror. Someone observed that Will Smith might actually be well-cast as the revenger, the "antagonist," rather than the "hero." That, I'd be interested in.

Also, this just came out today: http://chud.com/articles/articles/17126/1/HERE039S-HOW-SMITH-amp-SPIELBERG-JUSTIFY-SOFTENING-OLDBOY/Page1.html

They're remaking the HOST, why the fuck why??? Not that I have an instant dislike for remake attempts, but I do have a problem with this idiotic "ooo, American audiences will not like the original, cuz it's foriegn and all. AND IT WAS ONLY MADE TWO YEARS AGO."

Damn, they don't wait until the corpse is cold before they start fucking it with their remake phallus.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN looks absolutely wonderful by it's trailer. Not yet available on Netflix sadly.

Not the mention that it's both entirely accessible for American audiences, but simultaneously has some elements that are really improved with some knowledge of Korean culture!

No, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is currently exploding on the art house circuit. If there's a Landmark theater near you, it may be there. I know it's at the AFI Silver in Silver Spring.
