Holy bejabbers, my performance space in Montreal Fringe Festival seats about 120. The largest house I've ever worried about trying to fill was about, what, fifty? Sixty? And this time, I have no sexy henchgirls to help with the flyering.
Well, it's about time I finally dove right in and summed up the guts to market myself solo, like any Fringe performer worth his or her salt does. I've had the luxury of a supportive mother and sexy henchgirls to ease me into this, but now it's time to toss off the training wheels and pop those water wings. Montreal is where I get to suck it up and earn my big boy pants.

Back to trying to sum up both the courage and the forethought to write interesting and engaging e-mails to send my press release to a couple dozen people on the Montreal Fringe press mailing list. Wee-ow!

Date: 2009-06-01 03:19 am (UTC)About a fanmix? I have thought about making something like that but I didn't think it would be worth it seeing as you're probably the only person on my f-list who would find it amusing.

Date: 2009-06-01 04:00 am (UTC)Seriously. Make it part of your marketing. Put up signs with requirements. Interview people for the position.
At the absolute least, it would be fantastic fodder for future shows. :)

Date: 2009-06-01 01:13 pm (UTC)Do you have a .gif, or even a block of text, that describes the show and when/where it's at? I don't directly know anybody in Montreal, but I could put it on my website in case any of my readers do! (I'll pretend I like your act based on the strength of the Durian Smoothie performance. ;)

Date: 2009-06-01 03:07 pm (UTC)Can you pass me some info about the exact times & locations of the Montreal show, and I'll post that on my site with a link to your site for more info (hoping that those updates you refer to are going to include, like, where people should go and when)? Also, if there's something you'd like me to link to so that people can get a "taste" other than the durian smoothie vid, lemme know...first impressions matter, yah?
Dammit, now *I* want to see the show, but I won't blame you if Detroit isn't on your tour list. ;)

Date: 2009-06-01 04:13 pm (UTC)Here y'go! http://www.montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/hefner-monologues-the
Really, they should go WHENEVER THEY CAN PLZ. And sadly, as of yet I don't have any video of me in actual performance (hopefully that'll change soon!), so for lack of anything else, the durian smoothie may be what you'll want to use.
Welllllll... actually, there's also this:
But I dunno if that's much better! :)
Sadly, there's no Detroit Fringe Festival (yet), but hopefully someday I'll be captured by the evil Dr. Claw and, for my torture, he'll send me to your fair city. (See if you get THAT reference! It's what I always think of whenever I think of Detroit)

Date: 2009-06-06 06:34 pm (UTC)Okay, whew, that makes me feel a bit less anxious! I was starting to worry about realization that I'm going to a bilingual region and don't speak a lick of French, and oh god will I get looks for that and for not having French on any of my promo materials and will I get the French look of DOOM "oh you pitiful monolinguist Yank, moh ho ho ho!" GAH.
So yes, this helps! :)
I'll be arriving late Monday. Or maybe early Tuesday. We'll see how much I feel like driving.

Date: 2009-06-07 12:37 am (UTC)The Montreal Fringe gets a few dirty looks every year from the francophones because most of the performers and organizers are strictly English-speaking. They've been working on it, though, and I'm told this year's crop includes more French shows, which should result in fewer dirty looks.
But you shouldn't worry about being SPECIFICALLY targeted by the francophones (or their dirty looks). Quebecers can get iffy about public matters, such as advertising and getting French service in stores and restaurants, but they don't expect EVERYONE to be fluently bilingual, especially not in the context of Fringe. Plus, Montreal gets a lot of tourists, including a lot of "monolingual Yanks," so you shouldn't worry about getting by. I think I actually get a more hostile response from people when I speak French with my European accent than when I speak English.
Btw, I'm bilingual (and a translator), so if you absolutely feel you need to be able to say something in French, ask away.
