I wish I'd taken photos of the artwork hanging in the gallery at White Sands. They had paintings of the Bataan Death March, done by an actual Bataan survivor. The horror at seeing these images depicted was cut by distaste at the classically-stereotypical depiction of the Japanese: all bucktoothed sneers and jaundiced skin.
The combination left me unsettled in more ways than the artist intended. But those intentions were in there too, which only added to the problem.
