1.) SHAKESPEARE AND L.A. STORY ON IMDB
So I'm rather proud of my geek self. I was appalled (not not really surprised) that the imdb.com listing for "L.A. Story" trivia section was sorely lacking in information on the film's numerous Shakespeare references. Like, they didn't get a single reference. Oh, wait, no, the sharp trivia writer DID get that the Rick Moranis gravedigger is from Hamlet. Good for you, you win a cookie. So I registered and added in four more references- the "this (L.A.) England" speech was from Richard II, "sound and fury" from Macbeth, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Harris, than are dreamt of N your philosophy," was from Hamlet, and the really obscure one, "Oh wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, most wonderful, and yet again, wonderful," from As You Like It. Now once those are added, the three other geeks who look up such things on imdb.com will finally get the references. Boo-yah.

2.) THIS IS MY HOUSE
I'm working at the comic shop today, and so far five people have remarked on my playing my CHESS CD: "I'm not too used to hearing showtunes in a comic shop." Yeah, that's because they're all plebeians, not a classy joint like ours. They probably sell Pokemon cards too, I bet. Losers.

3.) COACH FRICKIN' KOHLER SINGS!
Kristen and I went to see Hairspray at the Kennedy Center last night. A hollow show, but fun nonetheless. And dude, John Pinette was playing Edna! COACH KOHLER FROM PARKER LEWIS CAN'T LOSE! *SQUEE*! I met him afterwards, what a sweet and huge guy.

4.) OH SPACEY, YOU WONDERFUL MASTURBATORY CLOSETED HOMOSEXUAL, YOU
BEYOND THE SEA was an odd little movie. The obviousness of how much of a vanity project it was made it jarring for awhile, but damn if I didn't get absorbed into it. It might have been better off as a live stage show, honestly. And there's no argument that Spacey had the moves and the voice of, if not Darin himself, that of a real swingin' showman. A curious little film.

5.) WOMEN SHOULD READ SUPERHERO BOOKS
My goal is to get more girls and women to read superhero comics. I think superhero stories are capable of being every bit as moving and powerful as any other types of stories. For god's sake, stuff like LOST and BUFFY and FIREFLY being written by people who grew up with or have actually written superhero comics! There is no good reason why the legions of female Sandman fans shouldn't be reading superheroes as well, as long as they're well-written. No reason at all.

6.) ALL RIGHT, YOU GOT ME
Ma and I are halfway through the FIREFLY DVDs. And although we both really seriously dislike BUFFY and ANGEL (if only it were just the Spike show...), we're hooked. Whedon's annoying "witty" dialog actually works and is fun here. I was really anticipating hating Kaylee, just because I hate every single one of Joss' cute innocent characters that he has in everything he does (Kitty in X-Men, Fred in Angel, Willow... ok, Willow was good half the time, but even she really got on my nerves sometimes). If Kaylee was more hyper and bouncy like I thought she would be, I'd hate her, but she is thankfully and surprisingly very low-key and sunny. And a tomboy, always hot. Yes, FIRELY is the best sci-fi show I've seen since FARSCAPE.

7.) BUT...
Mom and I are agreed, FARSCAPE is still better. Because FARSCAPE has Crichton, one of the coolest heroes ever, Scorprius, who out-spikes Spike in badassedness, and real Jim Henson muppets. What does Firefly have? Joss Whedon and a Baldwin. FARSCAPE=winner. And seriously, FIREFLY fans, how is it so many of you have never seen FARSCAPE? Even if you don't prefer it, you'd still absolutely love it! This makes Heffie sad.

I never wanted a Sid Icon. I wanted a Gary Oldman as Sid icon. I'd be a posuer if I used Sid or Johnny or anyone like that for an icon if I didn't listen to them. I'm just wanted to reference the movie, so there.

I'm way ahead of you on the getting women into comics. In the past two years alone, I've gotten 11 female friends into reading comics on a regular basis and watching DR. WHO, one of whom I've since started dating which is very fun and convenient. All a matter of starting them off right.

Chicks dig soap operas and once they realize that's what comics are, it ain't that hard really. :-P

Good point on the soap opera thing. And yeah, it really is all about starting them off right. SUPERMAN: RED SON has so far been foolproof good reading for everything. I have a friend, I think I'll start her off with GOLDEN AGE, then NEW FRONTIER, then go on from there.

I usually start them off with BATMAN YEAR ONE, SUPERMAN BIRTHRIGHT, SANDMAN, SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE, X-MEN: CHILDREN OF THE ATOM and PREACHER. I find all of those work wonderfully.

Oh I saw HAIRSPRAY at the Kennedy Center too. Definitely a good time, I'd say. Every now and then, it's refreshing to walk out of a theatre with a broad smile on your face like I did.

And if it makes you feel better, I'd been reading my dad's old Batman and Superman comics since I was a kid. So I'm one of the "cool" girls. :-D

Well yeah, but I've always known you were onna the "cool" girls anyway.

You saw Hairspray too! I should tell you that I actually met the actor who played the father at my comic shop. I didn't realize until two days ago that this guy I'd known for the past couple months was an actor in the show! Total coincidence! He was awesome and we hung out a bit afterwards. Small bloody world.

I read superhero comics. I'm currently subscribed to House of M Fantastic Four, Runaways, and Wildsiderz, and the comic shop has been instructed to put anything in my box if it has Doom or raptors in it. And they happily oblige. Even so, I don't like any of the shows you used as examples as why girls should read comics. I don't like any TV, with perhaps the exception of Iron Chef and some BBC "reality"-ish shows, like Ground Force and Changing Rooms and What Not to Wear. (Only the british versions.) And as much as I like those shows I don't watch TV at all. Ever. I just have more important things to do with my time..

I only used them as examples because so many of my friends, particularly female friends, are obsessed with one or more of those shows yet have hardly ever touched a comic, much less superhero. I have friends who are LOST fanatics, which pains me because one of the writers is Paul Dini, of the masterful BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and several awesome DC comics, and yet I sincerely doubt they'd ever read a Batman comic.

Those are fine books you're signed up for, but I'm always good to make recommendations if you're interested. Not to drain your pocketbook, of course, but I personally would love to see you dip your toes into the DC pool sometime.

Speaking of raptors, I need to get the Jurassic Park Raptors comics. They're written by Steve Englehart, who wrote the legendary Batman/Joker: Laughing Fish story, but more importantly, HE BROUGHT MULDOON BACK! I don't know how Muldoon survived, but he did just like I knew he would just because he is that badass. He and the raptors probably ended up sitting down and drinking scotch afterwards like Groundskeeper Willie and the wolf. "Dunnae worry, mate. Ah've been rasslin' raptors since ya was a twinkle in your mother's eye."

I didnt know there were any jurassic park comics, might have to check them out. Actually I'd rather not get into any other lines.. I'm probably going to drop wildsiderz and runaways after a while anyway. They have raptors, yes, and wildsiderz is lotsa eyecandy, but they are, afterall, about teenagers. Really I'm only concerned with Dr Doom.. and while I like batman, unless they come out with a Batman TAS comic, Im just not interested ;_

Well, there're no good Batman comics currently being produced, IMO. I was thinking more along the lines of suggesting some older, more classic stuff. The stuff that gets the old man in me shaking his liver-spotted fist and yelling, "Bah! They don't make comics like they used to! Back in my day, they were 2 crowns and you could eat them afterwards!" or something.

Seriously though. Certain Batman TPBs=teh shit. The Year One paperback and The Killing Joke are both dirt cheap too.

...and a Baldwin.

You do know that Adam Baldwin is not actually related to Alec, Stephen, et al., right?

Yeah, but his name is Baldwin for God's sake. It's enough for me to point and laugh.
