So I caught HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY again on TV, and I gotta ask you guys something. Now, I haven't read the books yet (actually, I wanna get 'em on tape, because the utter britishness of it just seems to demand to be read aloud), but did anyone else find Zooey Deschanel's performance as Trillian to be one of a very cold, stand-offish person who shits on Arthur and has a constant look of, "god, can't you do anything right?" to everyone and everything around her?

Because really, I realized today that her performance was the thing that juuuuuust pushed me over the edge and turned me off the movie as a whole. Which is a real bloody shame, because there is much delightfulness there. The whale may be my favorite part.

Yes, yes, I know, read the originals. Already working on that. I'm just sayin', I think the movie for me was utterly ruined by her there. All it did was remind me of Dave's theory about how Lois Lane is a terrible fuck.

I have not seen the movie, or the television show, or heard any of the radio shows, but I read the books and I have to say, Trillian never impressed me much. It sounds to me very much like Ms. Deschanel nailed her fairly well.

But just a note: it's an integral part of the Hitchhiker thing that the books are different from the radio show are different from the television show are different from the movie are different from the books, if you take my meaning. There's no one true canon for Hitchhiker overall, according to Douglas Adams. So if she's more or less cold-fishy in the movie than the books or anywhere else, well, that's acceptable in the material's paradigm.

Of course, I'm operating on 2 hours of sleep so I don't know if that was coherent.

I thought the actress was cute but Trillian, aside from having a cool name, is just a useless little tw...girl.

She's not supposed to be useless. She's supposed to be brilliant, with advanced degrees in both math and physics. On the TV series she was played as a total blonde dimwit.

She gets to be genuinely useful on a few occasions in the books. I quite liked the actress who played her in the new radio series.

Agreed.

I haven't even finnished the books, only got through one and a half, and then I saw the movie and realized how much they fucking cut out! It aggravated me! That and Zaphod is done wrong. Two heads, not one that pops out from under the other.

that entire ramble by Dave is exactly why he may well not ever have a truly healthy relationship.

it is pretty much cemented by the last part about "then she tells you that she loves you and makes you feel all apreciated and loved and wanted and stuff"

because really.. after a woman satisfies your every sexual craving and weird kink, she should really make you a sandwich and then dote on you. letting her know that she is special and maybe doing some nice things for her? a good woman doesnt need that.

the entire rant was pretty much "me me me me my needs me me my wants me me me feed me me me me me me me now tell me i'm special."

and the fact that he comments that he is 'the only one who undersands you and that you know it' is exactly the mentality that led him to feel he could completely disregard your feelings on so many occasions. this is what we call "taking you for granted". how often did he ever say to you that YOU were the only one who understood him (other than when he was feeling sorry for himself) and how much it meant that you were always willing to defend him?

you may want to screen this comment. i more meant it to be just between us.

You'll get absolutely no disagreement from me. What we had was very much an abusive relationship, but I stuck with it and put up with so much and took so much shit because I did care about him.

And because he really did amuse me, even when he mostly was ranting and rarely, rarely ever actually having a real conversation. I mean, that rant is quintesential Dave; as you just pointed out, it sums him up beautifully, and as such it is SO going in the Hefner Monologues. And as much as it depicts everything wrong with him, at the same time, it also showed why I loved him, because this shit was so wrong yet it amused me endlessly.

I don't give a shit about screening comments. If he even reads this, I could give a rat's ass. He needs to know this so that maybe, just maybe, he can grow the fuck up. I've heard tell that he's only gotten worse since he and I "broke up."

well, its your call. i just wanted you to feel ok doing whatever you thought best.

and yes, he was sometimes amusing, and i know that that can count for alot.

i am glad, though, that you have good hindsight about the whole thing.

so that convo between you and he is going in the HMs?

I dunno if it will be word for word, but certainly the points you addressed will be. If, that is, I need to further illustrate for the reader how unhealthy and abusive that relationship was.

BTW, this mix rocks. I ADORE "Neverending Story" and I recognize "The Age of Pamparius" from the opening credits of Jackass-spinoff, the Wildboyz.
