Jun. 17th, 2006 12:35 amSo I caught HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY again on TV, and I gotta ask you guys something. Now, I haven't read the books yet (actually, I wanna get 'em on tape, because the utter britishness of it just seems to demand to be read aloud), but did anyone else find Zooey Deschanel's performance as Trillian to be one of a very cold, stand-offish person who shits on Arthur and has a constant look of, "god, can't you do anything right?" to everyone and everything around her?
Because really, I realized today that her performance was the thing that juuuuuust pushed me over the edge and turned me off the movie as a whole. Which is a real bloody shame, because there is much delightfulness there. The whale may be my favorite part.
Yes, yes, I know, read the originals. Already working on that. I'm just sayin', I think the movie for me was utterly ruined by her there. All it did was remind me of Dave's theory about how Lois Lane is a terrible fuck.

There's no one true canon for Hitchhiker overall, according to Douglas Adams. So if she's more or less cold-fishy in the movie than the books or anywhere else, well, that's acceptable in the material's paradigm.
Of course, I'm operating on 2 hours of sleep so I don't know if that was coherent.

Date: 2006-06-18 02:16 pm (UTC)I haven't even finnished the books, only got through one and a half, and then I saw the movie and realized how much they fucking cut out! It aggravated me! That and Zaphod is done wrong. Two heads, not one that pops out from under the other.

Date: 2006-06-19 11:37 pm (UTC)it is pretty much cemented by the last part about "then she tells you that she loves you and makes you feel all apreciated and loved and wanted and stuff"
because really.. after a woman satisfies your every sexual craving and weird kink, she should really make you a sandwich and then dote on you. letting her know that she is special and maybe doing some nice things for her? a good woman doesnt need that.
the entire rant was pretty much "me me me me my needs me me my wants me me me feed me me me me me me me now tell me i'm special."
and the fact that he comments that he is 'the only one who undersands you and that you know it' is exactly the mentality that led him to feel he could completely disregard your feelings on so many occasions. this is what we call "taking you for granted". how often did he ever say to you that YOU were the only one who understood him (other than when he was feeling sorry for himself) and how much it meant that you were always willing to defend him?
you may want to screen this comment. i more meant it to be just between us.

I mean, that rant is quintesential Dave; as you just pointed out, it sums him up beautifully, and as such it is SO going in the Hefner Monologues. And as much as it depicts everything wrong with him, at the same time, it also showed why I loved him, because this shit was so wrong yet it amused me endlessly.
I don't give a shit about screening comments. If he even reads this, I could give a rat's ass. He needs to know this so that maybe, just maybe, he can grow the fuck up. I've heard tell that he's only gotten worse since he and I "broke up."
