thehefner: (Dark Tower: Pere Callahan Kicks Ass!)
[personal profile] thehefner
GIF, because Father Callahan from SALEM'S LOT and DARK TOWER truly, indeed does kick arse for the lord. Lord, though, sometimes I do wish I had photoshop rather than MSPaint, but I think I make do.

I'm almost halfway into the final book of DARK TOWER, and oh, this is going to end badly. At worst, it's going to be a infuriating and disappointingly crushing. At best, it's going to be devastating and emotionally crushing. Which really is the way it goes for ol' Roland, isn't it?

Speaking of Tower, I was not aware that Tower Records is going out of business! God, I wish I'd known sooner! The one in Rockville has been pretty picked-over already, but I managed to snag a few DVDs at 40% off, so huzzah! I just shot a nice chunk of my comic clerk paycheck, but I think it was worth it for STAR WARS EPs 4 & 6, the new ones with the original versions. Now, on one hand, the original versions are unremastered grainy laserdisc transfers, but who the hell cares! Actually, I might not care if it weren't for the fact that the remastered versions, riddled as they are with lies and bastardizations (No, Hayden! You do NOT get to stand all blue-ghost-y next to Alec Guinness! Bad emo Jedi!), is that these new versions are absolutely gorgeous. Guhhh, I don't think I've ever seen a DVD remastering handled so beautifully. Why, if it weren't for the hairstyles, you almost might think it wasn't made in the 70's-80's!

I also got THE PRODUCERS musical, which makes me very happy with its over-the-top theatrical goodness, and SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES volume 3. That show is sadly underrated, with some excellent voice work by Clancy Brown as Lex, Miguel Ferrer as Aquaman, Ted Levine as Sinestro, Lori Petty as Livewire, and Michael Ironside as Darkseid.

Oh, man, I want to see a movie where Jack Nicholson, Michael Ironside, and Kurtwood Smith play brothers, I really do. Maybe it could be in the same movie where they face off against brothers played by Nick Nolte and Gary Busey (One's grizzled, the other's bugfuck insane, together they fight crime and are blond!).

Oh, so how many of you reacted the way I did when I heard the title for Panic! At the Disco's single, "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off"? I'm betting at least four of you.

Yep, you were one of the four! Actually, at least five, now that I think about it.

Yeah, but, like, did you get the reference? Besides the general suckitude? (and while they may not be my cuppa tea, did you see the music video they did with the Dresden Dolls for "Backstabber"? Is pretty cool and makes me respect them a bit.)

well, the Dolls were touring as their opener. we went and saw them, then left when Panic started.

Yes, yes, I know that, silly boy.

I'm sayyyying watch the video, it's fun and gives me a modicum of respect for the band.

Hmph. Chump acts like I don't pay attention to his life none... ;)

hehe we think that they may have been using Panic to boost their own popularity with the video.

Oh, of course. I just think it's kinda neat for Panic to happily *allow* themselves to be used such, and seeming to really get into the antics.

i'll give them that.

No argument there, pally.

Although how sad is it for me that after hearing the sanitized version of that song over and over and over again during its first couple months of play that it actually gave me a teeny little thrill to hear the uncensored version actually being played on DC 101 as of a month ago?

Hearing the words "whore" and "goddamn" on normal radio for once in our over sanitized culture. How sad that I should get a teeny thrill over that. How sad for us all. Sighh.

i'm actually not against radio being cleaned a bit.. so many kids can hear things.

there's a limit, but i gotta admit there are things i wouldnt want my kid hearing.

I just wince at censorship in general. I hate hearing bleeps or glaringly obvious omissions on radio, TV, whatever. There's plenty of stuff out there without swearing to play as it is, you should be able to have that on the radio.

Like, I'm not exactly a Green Day fan, but when you censor "Kill all the fags who don't agree," you're kinda screwing up part of the *point* of the song.

Date: 2006-11-25 08:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] spacechild.livejournal.com
yes, but a 10 year old who doesnt get the point anyway may get the wrong idea and think that their beloved Green Day is advocating this sort of thing.

beats the kid learning to improperly use the term 'fag'.

(the proper usage is as a burn to use on your friends)

Which is why, if the radio cannot be accorded for the parents discretion (as I firmly believe in the responsibilties of the parents), it shouldn't be on the air at all. Or not on the "family" stations, anyway. I cannot stand neutered art.

That's what I think, anyways, you big flaming cigarette.

Date: 2006-11-25 11:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] spacechild.livejournal.com
honestly, i tend to agree that the first responsibility is on the parents.

but there are things that shouldnt be too easily accessable to kids, either.

Aye, aye, understood and I agree.

Got yer message, by the way. I will indeed keep that in mind and keep an eye out. I'll leave here around 8ish.

so if i'm a little off my game tonight, you'll understand why.

its because i'm in agonizing pain.

Tower Records is going out of business?! I'm shocked...

I have a hunch things started to go badly for them when my father left the US for good this summer... He used to empty his wallet there every week.

He'll be crushed when he hears this. :-(

I'm hoping to start getting the Batman and Superman Animated series first set dvd's for christmas-the scene at the end of the first contact with Apokolips where Superman rips up the street in grief after Darkseid kills Turpin, and then his gravestone says "Earth's Greatest Hero" got me teary eyed everytime I saw it.

ok, first off.. the very end of the Dark Tower series? like the very very end?

no spoliers from me.. but you will either totally dig it, or scream in frustration. and thus i build the tension for you.

me? i felt violated but sort of like "well, i can understand why he raped me, i guess."

secondly: Jack, Michael, and Kurtwood? that would be hilarious. and then Christian Slater as Jack's son, definitely.

tres: remind me that i have your venture brothers dvds in my bag for you.
