Booze and JUSTICE LEAGUE movie(s)

Halloween Party turned out damn well. I had a grand time, and I hope everyone else did too. It was also a good opportunity to clean out my liquor cabinet, for which you guys were happy to help.
The highlight, those those of us who experienced it, was finishing off my father's 20-something-year-old bottle of Jameson. I don't know what the hell Dad had a bottle of Jameson for, as he never drank anything other than Miller Lite or Seagram's gin and tonic all his life (yuck!), and I wasn't really sure how well an open, half-consumed bottle of Irish whiskey would age. Ohhhhh ho, my friends... that was mellow. It hardly tasted alcoholic at all. It was almost bittersweet to kill what was left, but it was as good an opportunity as any. Dad's way was to horde and keep things locked in his possession.
Y'know, this is why I'm so intolerant around collectors. I mean, the folks who come in looking for "variant" covers and limited edition books and action figures. I'm a firm believer that these things are not meant to sit in their packages, hermetically sealed. They're meant to be taken out and enjoyed, perhaps even shared! Even if it means reducing its own shelf life, because... well, that's what they're for! And eventually, sad and difficult as it may be, one has to move on.
I still haven't busted open that 30-something-year-old bottle of Martell VSOP cognac, though. I'm still holding out for the perfect opportunity, and have no idea when that'll be. Drinking it with someone who knows what the hell they're tasting would also be ideal.
Meantime, Mom came back from Rehoboth beach with much stuff to restock the ol' liquor cabinet: Chambord, Jose Cuervo Tradicional, and four kinds of Vodka: Smirnoff's regular, raspberry, and citrus, and Absolut vanilla. Danny remarked that it's amusing how she's both a touch concerned for my drinking while gladly helping me restock and experiment with mixing.
In comic movie news, Warner Bros. has a strange plan regarding their upcoming DC Comics movies. I mean, the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie isn't even fully cast (and so far, not with any stars), and yet they've already announced spin-offs of THE FLASH (with a new director... again!) and GREEN LANTERN.
I've remained largely apathetic to this whole process. Strange, as I'm a DC Comics fan over a Marvel fan, and I've followed the Marvel films with far more interest. Maybe I'm just not as open-minded to the "reinventions" they'll do to my beloved characters, for the sensitive palates of the mainstream crowd. Maybe it's that, BATMAN BEGINS aside, movies based on DC characters have largely all been totally fucked-up and wrong-headed for the past decade or two.
(Maybe it's also the fact that Maxwell Lord will be the bad guy in the JL movie. Oh Max, even in twist-top death, your name is slandered!)
I mean, FLASH went from David Goyer (which could have gone either way, really... the dude co-wrote BATMAN BEGINS and wrote all of the BLADE movies) to Shawn Levy of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM infamy now to the guy who did WEDDING CRASHERS and the already-reviled FRED CLAUS. This new director's vision for the film is, "You can't outrun yourself," which, while cheesy, also hints to a less parodic tone. God, I hope. But I still remain apathetic.
But then the GREEN LANTERN movie news hits. I have no idea about the quality of the film; it's being directed by a vet of DAWSON'S CREEK and written by Mark Guggenheim of LAW & ORDER and Michael Green of HEROES and SMALLVILLE (and that abortion of a new Joker origin), so none of that is especially encouraging for GL.
Bear in mind, a GREEN LANTERN movie (series) has the potential--nay, deserves--to be a major huge fucking STAR WARS/LORD OF THE RINGS in space cosmic opera on the grandest scale. Understandably, DC would want to not go all-out with the budget of the first film. But still, I'm seriously reserving judgment.
However, I am incredibly pleased that Hal Jordan will be the main character of the GL film, just because I'd resigned myself to the idea that John Stewart would be GL in every single film and TV incarnation. So I can't help but be excited for that prospect alone.

Date: 2007-10-29 05:14 pm (UTC)Of all the stories, there are better then OMAC, even that though, you could work it as part of Cadmus or Checkmate without involving Max. It seems kind of unnecessary. Also unnecessary is working in Talia since this isn't tied to Nolan's film series..it makes no sense!

Date: 2007-10-29 05:49 pm (UTC)Well, I'd be super duper careful if reading a first edition, but that's because I'm hard-wired brainwashed to consider books holy things. I probably wouldn't mess with a first edition of BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. I mean, even if I could read Russian. You know what I mean.

Date: 2007-10-29 05:33 pm (UTC)This first film is meant to be an introduction and origin as to how Hal joins the GLC. John is the GL in the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie, but according to a script review, there's virtually no mention of the Guardians nor the Corps (which is patently ridiculous, but then, they'll have a lot to juggle in the JL film as it is).
If JL and GL are both hits, I bet we'd see a sequel or two of GL that would expand the mythos, as well as bring in new GLs like Kyle, Guy, and even the already-established-in-another-film John.

Date: 2007-10-29 05:39 pm (UTC)...man, though. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a Wonder Woman movie set during WWII? Or a Dibnys movie done like an early-60's romantic comedy?
