thehefner: (Watchmen Babies: V For Vacation)
[personal profile] thehefner
When someone posted scans revealing a real children's book of Heath Ledger Joker ruining Bruce Wayne's birthday party, one commenter began speculating what would happen if the WATCHMEN movie would also come with kid-friendly stories. Really, what would a birthday party episode of WATCHMEN BABIES be like?

"When are you going to throw my surprise party, Adrian?"

"When? I did it thirty-five minutes ago."

BEST DAY EVER.

"Hurm. Piñata. Piñata with head split in half."

I shared this with Bloo, and soon we found ourselves wondering who would play whom in a Muppet version of WATCHMEN. Our casting has gone as thus:

Rorschach: Gonzo

Dr. Manhattan: Kermit

Silk Spectre II: Miss Piggy

Nite Owl: Scooter

Hollis (and) Mason: Satler and Waldorf

Silk Spectre I (Sally): Miss Piggy (she would insist on double-casting, naturally)

The Comedian: Fozzy Bear (waka waka waka!)

Hooded Justice: Sam the Eagle

Moloch: Beaker

Ozymandias: Animal (all he would say is, "SMARTEST MAN! SMARTEST MAN!")

Any other casting ideas?

By the way, WATCHMEN director Zack Snyder put out a contest on YouTube, inviting people to make their own commercial for Veidt enterprises (circa 1985 or earlier). The best ones will actually be used in the final movie. I've seen a couple, but so far, the only one that truly stands out is this:

Finally, I know a lot of us are still extremely apprehensive about how WATCHMEN is going to turn out, but I am frustrated to see so many people dismissing it outright with such hostility. This film actually does have a great deal of promise. Like, not long ago, I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] chickenhat about the film, and he was uncertain, hesitant.

Then I said, "You know who's playing Moloch, right?"

"No, who?"

"Matt Frewer."

"... TICKET. BOUGHT."

Hooded Justice: Sam the Eagle

Dude, Sam would never agree to play a character who is strongly suggested to be a Communist sympathizer.

Well fine. But what about a closeted homosexual? In that case, then he could be Captain Metropolis!

I can't stop laughing at the idea of a seriously distressed Beaker being menaced by Gonzo (who will probably do all his menacing to The Flight of the Bumblebee).

I find the negativity surrounding the Watchmen movie to be extremely irritating. I know many comic fans pride themselves on their cynicism and jaded outlooks, but come on! Give it a chance! It reminds me of the people complaining that 'Flash: Rebirth' is going to suck and justifying it by repeating the same old arguments ('Wah, Barry Allen's death was supposed to be permanent!' Ignoring the fact that the writer himself created an 'out' to resurrect Barry at some point...). I wish I knew why comic fans tend to be so negative and often melodramatic

God, I know, right? Playing off the Rorschach/Moloch scenes with Gonzo and Beaker is just a source of pure delightfulness.

Oh my god, THANK you. What the fuck is with the whiners and bitchers on the daily scans when it comes to Barry? I just wanna give 'em all a collective slap! "Wah, death is meaningless!" WELCOME TO COMICS. "Wah, I want Bart back!" Me too, and what's that have to do with anything?!?! "Wah, Barry's boring!" Dude, it's almost not even worth saying there no bad characters, just bad writers. I'm almost at just collectively saying STFU, which does nobody any good. Gah, I need a cookie.

I find the negativity surrounding the Watchmen movie to be extremely irritating.

Why should we trust Zack Snyder? This is, after all, the man who successfully made the entire cast of 300 horrifically wooden. Snyder can't direct human talent to save his life, and with Watchmen being such a character focused film, with such vivid differentiation in personality, I think there's nothing inappropriate about being skeptical about Snyder. 300 was an absolutely gorgeous looking film but was totally devoid of life or spark. I fear Watchmen will be the same way, and my fears are grounded in Snyder's demonstrated track record, not fangirl autoskepticism. The trailer didn't give me much hope that Snyder has suddenly morphed into an excellent director of actors, to be honest. Comics fandom has been burned too many times by atrocious films that make me embarrassed to be a self-professed reader of comics. I don't want Watchmen to be the same way.

Did I say we should trust Zack Snyder?

By no means am I saying don't be apprehensive. But there's been more than enough evidence out there to show that he and his entire crew as deeply, sincerely dedicated to getting this film right, and if it fails, it was be from lack of talent, not lack of effort. Just one of the surprisingly promising elements was the casting of non-name actors but rather Oscar-worthy and character actors.

So far, he's shown us that there might actually be the potential for this to be something special, and its on that potential that I'm willing to give him a chance. In the meantime, we should be hoping for the best, not expecting the worst.

To be fair (and this is pretty weak as far as defenses go) the source material of 300 was pretty hollow to begin with, imho. That sets it apart from Watchmen right off the bat. 300, be it graphic novel or film, is all about the kick ass visuals. Now obviously it would have been much better had Snyder managed to infuse 300 with the humanity that I felt Frank Miller's graphic novel lacked, but I believe that it was a faithful, if unambitious, adaptation. I do expect and hope for more from the Watchmen film, and I hope its much more complex source material creates a much greater desire in Snyder to create something amazing and not just settle for a 'decent' adaptation.

I apologize, I didn't mean to sound so dismissive of people's legitimate fears and apprehensions. I know comic fans are constantly burned by Hollywood (though Iron Man and The Dark Knight have hopefully set a more positive trend). It's not the well expressed fears and skepticism I have a problem with so much as the knee jerk 'It's going to FAIL, It's going to FAIL, you'd almost think I WANT it to FAIL' sort of negativity that grinds my gears. Obviously there is nothing wrong with being pessimistic, but sometimes I just want to squee without someone telling me the movie I want to see is going to fail or the comic I'm interested in reading is going to suck.

But then I'm a cockeyed optimist by nature, I leave it to others to be more realistic.

See, I don't see people saying "I want it to fail." I see fear expressed that it will fail, and I completely understand and empathize with that fear. I think that might be the genesis of a great deal of the negativity.

I don't want Watchmen to fail. I want it to succeed smashingly. But I don't think Snyder is up to the task, and if this film produces wooden performances and is all pretty visuals over content, it will make me very sad and very, very angry, because that betrays the work entirely, and we'll be faced once again with people dismissing an incredible work of sequential literature. If it winds up with people saying "see? Even the most important comic work of the last thirty years is shallow and adolescent fantasy," I'll be inconsolable.

"i might be able to like --love this to death-- if it were out of continuity"
I might love it if you were one day hit by a car or a truck, Mainly because when continuity-nerds die, the better.

Who the hell trolls an LJ?

The muppets are having some wierd caldestine return with all these great Beaker youtube vids (like the Ode to Joy one you showed me last week:)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDFgtFXfnv0

A Watchmen/Muppet one can't be far behind...
Your hollis and Mason choice slays me... how about Pepe the Prawn playing the kid reading the comic book leaning on a spark plug?

BTW: I'm like this... I'm stomaching any misgivings of the Watchmen film until I see it in it's entirety. Like I did everytime some yutz attempt to adapt any of the Dune novels (David Lynch/Sci Fi) Like theatre, we have to let go when a beloved writers' work is adapted, let it unfold, and judge it afterwards. We might be pissed at what's left out and portrayals that veer from our tiny little intractible preconcieved notions of what the characters should be... but I'd rather give it a chance just for the sheer attempt of tackling the awesomeness.

HAHAHA, oh my god, the "Danny Boy" trio returns! Beautiful!

Okay, Pepe can be the kid, but only if Stweetums is the news vendor. Or Gordon from Sesame Street.

Aye, quite right, and it's an apt comparison of theatre, especially for us Shakespeare lovers; most of us have at least one idealized version of a play that no other productions will ever live up to. It's clear that WATCHMEN won't be the book, but there's hope that it might actually be worthwhile and capture the spirit in part or even whole. Which is more than can be said for Frank Miller's SPIRIT.
